mom vs the mayan calendar
mom: i'm watching dancing with the stars. what are you watching?
A: the universe
mom: what's that?
A: a show on the history channel
mom: your dad likes the history channel. do you believe all that stuff?
A: what stuff? history?
mom: well okaaaaaay
A: [uncomfortable silence]
mom: they say in the year 2012 there isn't going to be a day in december
A: are you talking about the mayan calendar prophecy?
mom: they say that in 2012 there isn't going to be a day in december
A: [realizing this is will just be too exhausting to explain] the mayans predicted that in decemeber of 2012 there will be a major cosmic event based on various weather cycles and things like volcanos and earthquakes they had observed
mom: what do they think is going to happen
A: i don't know. they didn't either. just a change.
mom: well they say that in the year 2012...

I have a daughter who is 9. I keep thinking my mom will adore her and delight in her, but she never did with me and now she doesn’t with my daughter either. In fact the opposite is true. Not that she plays favorites...
I should preface this by saying that my mother and I have never been particularly close, and I’m not sure why. Even my dad admits that we “clash,” and he “doesn’t know what it is about me that gets to her.” Nice, right?
